Qianmen. "On 16 June [1900] Boxers attacked the richest trading quarter of the Chinese City, firing all shops which sold foreign goods. Over 4000 stores - goldsmiths, jewellers, fan, silk, fur, lantern and curio shops - were incinerated as the flames swept northwards. It was a terrifying spectacle as 'a lurid light growing ever brighter and brighter turned the dark night into an unnatural day.' The fire engulfed the magnificent city gate, the Chienmen. Its great rafters of Burmese teak seemed to the watching foreigners to burn with barbaric splendour despite 'the efforts of several Chinese fire-engines with all their paraphernalia of gongs, and banners, and horns...'..."
